Fight Asthma Now©

Fight Asthma Now© (FAN) is a free, school-based asthma management program offered to children and teens. Through FAN programs, our asthma educators use engaging and active lesson plans to give children the tools and knowledge they need to identify and avoid their triggers, manage asthma episodes and control asthma on a long-term basis. Monaghan Medical Corporation is a proud sponsor of RHA’s Fight Asthma Now© program. Through Monaghan’s generous support, RHA provides a free Monaghan Z Stat Anti-Static Valved Holding Chamber to all Fight Asthma Now© participants.

Fight Asthma Now© for Youth

The youth edition of Fight Asthma Now© is intended for children in third through sixth grades. The program is delivered in three 60-minute sessions or four 45-minute sessions, and the structure of the program allows us to teach at the children’s learning pace. This program requires a minimum of eight participants.

Virtual Fight Asthma Now©

Virtual Fight Asthma Now© (VFAN) is a free asthma management program for children grades 3-12 with asthma. The program is designed to give them the tools and knowledge they need to identify and avoid their triggers, manage asthma episodes, and control their asthma on a long-term basis. VFAN is the virtual version of our Fight Asthma Now program for children living outside of the Chicagoland area. This program is self-guided through a bitmoji classroom over the course of 4 lessons, with a supplemental 5th lesson on smoking and asthma. VFAN will be made available for those located outside Chicago or the Cook County area.

Fight Asthma Now© for Teens

The teen edition of Fight Asthma Now© is intended for students in seventh through 12th grades. The program caters to a teen audience and helps teens understand how to make health a priority despite social pressures, such as the pressure to smoke. The program is typically taught in three 60-minute sessions or four 45-minute sessions. For teens in 11th and 12th grades, we include activities to prepare them to care for their asthma as they transition to living away from home. This program requires a minimum of eight participants.

FAN Validation Study

A study validating the effectiveness of the Fight Asthma Now© program was published in the October 2011 issue of the Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. Led by Dr. Giselle Mosnaim, the team aimed to assess the impact of the FAN educational program on predominantly low-income minority students: youth (3rd-6th graders) and teens (7th-8th graders). Results of the study suggest that FAN significantly increases knowledge about asthma and the technique for using a spacer, both of which are essential to managing one’s asthma.
