Illinois General Assembly Passes HB4247: Allows for Emergency Asthma Medication at School Athletic Events
May 20, 2026, CHICAGO – We congratulate the Illinois General Assembly on the passage of HB4247, which amends the Illinois School Code to allow trained school personnel to administer asthma medication to a person at school-sponsored athletics. This law will create a healthier and safer environment for all Illinois students. State Representative Rita Mayfield (D- 60th District) and State Senator Adriane Johnson (D – 30th District) were the leading sponsors.
“We would like to thank the legislators and advocates who worked in support of this measure,” said RHA President and CEO Rob Anderson. “Every student with asthma should be able to participate in athletic activities without worrying about their next asthma episode.”
Under the new law, a school nurse or athletic personnel should be trained to administer undesignated asthma medication to a person at a school-sponsored athletic practice or game. Schools are able to maintain a supply of asthma medication in a secure location in a gym or practice field.
The law was inspired by the story of Christopher Redding. He was a student leader, three-sport athlete, and scholar who tragically passed away at age 18 due to exercise-induced asthma. Student athletes are at heightened risk of sudden, exercise-induced asthma attacks, which can be life-threatening without rapid access to a rescue inhaler.
Helen Hammond Redding, mother of Christopher and Executive Director of the Christopher D. Redding Youth Asthma Foundation (CDRYAF), praised the actions of the Illinois legislature:
“Since Christopher’s tragic death, our mission has been to ensure that no other family suffers a similar tragedy due to limited asthma knowledge or access to medication. As athletes are at heightened risk for asthma exacerbation, it has always been my dream to ensure that athletes are protected while engaging in sports or athletic activities.”
State Representative Rita Mayfield introduced the bill in the House:
“Every year, thousands of students in Illinois visit the emergency room for asthma-related incidents,” said Mayfield. “With this legislation, we’re helping prevent these incidents from becoming emergencies. Students will now be able to administer their own asthma medication during school athletic events, and staff will be required to complete training about recognizing and responding to respiratory distress. This measure could help save lives, and it will save students the stress and anxiety of finding someone to administer their asthma medication during an emergency.”
State Senator Adriane Johnson introduced the bill in the Senate:
“Rescue inhalers are an essential tool for managing asthma symptoms and protecting-long term health,” said Johnson. “Students with asthma should be able to participate in school activities with confidence. Having medication nearby provides peace of mind for children, faculties and parents alike.”
