RHA-Inogen Oxygen Fellowship Program
Oxygen therapy is a cornerstone of care for people living with chronic respiratory disease, acute hypoxemia, and complex cardiopulmonary conditions. Yet despite its widespread use, there remain gaps in standardized education and advanced training for healthcare professionals related to optimizing oxygen delivery, selecting appropriate devices, and ensuring patient safety. Inconsistent or suboptimal use of oxygen therapy can contribute to poor patient outcomes, avoidable hospitalizations, and increased healthcare costs.
To address these gaps, the Respiratory Health Association (RHA), in partnership with Inogen, is launching an Oxygen Fellowship Program designed to provide structured, evidence-based training for clinicians involved in the care of patients who require oxygen therapy. The Fellowship will focus on strengthening clinical knowledge, promoting patient-centered approaches, and advancing best practices across care settings.
Through this partnership, RHA and Inogen aim to support clinical excellence, improve patient outcomes, and build leadership capacity among healthcare professionals working in respiratory care. By combining RHA’s public health and patient-centered expertise with Inogen’s leadership in oxygen delivery technology, the Fellowship seeks to advance high-quality, equitable, and effective oxygen therapy practices.
IMPORTANT NOTICE*
The 2026 Oxygen Fellowship is a pilot initiative. Applications will be accepted only from institutions that have received a direct invitation from RHA. Future cycles may expand eligibility based on pilot-year findings.

Identify current bottle necks at the Fellow’s home institution and suggest processes to make oxygen delivery to the patient more efficient and timelier.
Submission of findings from #1 and #2 as one more abstract(s) to a US national professional meeting prior to end of Fellowship. Collaboration with other peers is encouraged.
Presentation of findings at the annual RHA-led Living Better Together conference.

Applicants must have full-time appointments with one of the following institutions:
• Vanderbilt University
• University of Michigan
• Temple University
• University of Illinois Chicago
To be considered for the Inogen–Respiratory Health Association Oxygen Fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria at the time of application:
The applicant is a clinician or trainee actively involved in the care of patients who require oxygen therapy, including:
Respiratory Therapists (RTs)
Registered Nurses (RNs)
Physician fellows (clinical or post-doctoral)
The applicant must identify a qualified mentor at the time of application who will provide guidance and oversight throughout the one-year fellowship period. Mentors must demonstrate institutional support for the fellow’s participation.
Award Structure & Submission
Each Oxygen Fellow is required to commit 50% full-time professional effort (0.50 FTE) to Fellowship activities during the one-year project period. The award will provide up to $50,000 in salary support, inclusive of fringe benefits, to support the Fellow’s required effort on the project. If 50% of the Fellow’s institutional base salary exceeds $50,000, the applicant institution must provide the remaining salary support from non-Fellowship funds. Any additional institutional support to ensure 50% effort should be documented in the letter of support from the Fellow’s supervisor. Any portion of salary above the Fellowship cap is the responsibility of the Fellow’s institution.
In addition, $5,000 will be allocated for mentor support and $5,000 in project funds for conference travel, manuscript or abstract fees, educational materials, and other Fellowship-related costs. Institutional indirect or overhead costs will not be supported during the award cycle.
Applications must be submitted electronically by 5:00PM (CST) on April 15, 2026, through the submission link on RHA’s website. Paper applications will not be accepted.
