September 17, 2026 – Chicago, IL – Respiratory Health Association is disappointed by the decision that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) made this week to repeal restrictions on emissions generated from U.S. power plants, as well as the proposed rescinding of every remaining greenhouse gas standard for the power sector.
This decision ensures Americans will continue to breathe more dangerous air for many years to come. Power plants are the second leading source of emissions nationally. This puts in place an air quality health framework that is ineffective, does not protect vulnerable groups, and will lead to more illness and death.
“This misguided decision by the EPA is disappointing, not only because of its dismantling of critical environmental protections, but also because of its disregard for the millions of people who live near these pollution sources. They will disproportionately suffer the health impacts,” said Rob Anderson, RHA President and CEO. “This decision is a grave mistake, the impact of which cannot be ignored. Lung health and clean air is a unifying mission, and Respiratory Health Association will continue our work to protect air quality, especially for the young, seniors, and people living with lung disease and other chronic medical conditions.”
